      In the past, when we lived in Houston, I would go down and help with the big holiday meals for the poor and homeless, both Thanksgiving and Xmas. Now that I live here there is no need for those types of events, I haven't seen anyone that is need.

    For those of you having a traditional meal today; apart from the main, what’s the unique family side dish you must have? Grandma or Aunt Claire always makes it, and it just isn’t right without it.

    We have two; the type of stuffing we have, and I make cranberry coleslaw. I change the sides often, sometimes it’s carrots or roasted Brussels sprouts, sometimes I sauté green beans with almonds and black olives, etc. But if the stuffing isn’t done with pine nuts and apples, or there isn’t cranberry coleslaw on the table I hear about it. Stridently.

    What’s your must-have?

    We're having the family dinner this weekend because of some circumstances. So today, the wife just bakes a couple of turkey drumsticks, whips up some mashed potatoes and gravy, cranberries, a loaf of that good $1.00 Walmart french bread and a small $3 pumpkin pie.
    You know, it was almost as good as the full fledged Thanksgiving dinner. Not bad for just about an hour and $10.
    However....Saturday, I feast.:hungry:

    Cranberry sauce, my wife’s family has to have it made with meat grinder ground cranberries. (You know the old crank type grinder that you clamped to the table/countertop) With fruit, apples, oranges and the like, chopped up with them and mixed into relish. Fucking nasty shit, it is. Panic occurred two years ago when it was discovered that I sold that old grinder when we moved onto the boat.

    Well my sister-in-law came to the rescue when she found one at a yard sale, so we had that nasty shit again today.

    BTW, my Canadian farm girl mother, used to make cranberry jelly at canning time, so we always had the really good stuff at our house.
