The second economically strongest chain Kaufland, which operates more than 140 stores in the country, increased its turnover from 64 to 72 billion crowns, or by around 12.5%.
This appears from the financial statements published in the commercial register, which refer to the management of the company in the fiscal year from March 1, 2022 to February 28, 2023. In the same period the net profit increased from 3.26 billion crowns to 3 .4 billion crowns.
Last year Kaufland attracted attention mainly thanks to the launch of the Kaufland.cz marketplace, with which it entered the highly competitive Internet market. The market offers, for example, consumer goods, household appliances, electronics, gardening supplies, household appliances and other assortments.
However, it is not yet possible to deduce from last year’s results how well the market worked, because the current figures reflect the financial year up to 28 February 2023. Kaufland only launched its market in the country in April.

The Kaufland eCommerce Fulfillment CZ subsidiary operates a large warehouse in Cheb, which provides storage and logistics services for the online platform not only in Germany, but also in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. In the period up to February 28, 2023, the company recorded a turnover of 134 million crowns and a net profit of more than 9.2 million crowns.
Together with Lidl, Kaufland belongs to the German Schwarz group, which employs over 500,000 people. It has been operating in the Czech Republic since 1998. In addition to retail stores of various formats, it also operates two logistics centers and its own meat factory. In the Czech Republic it employs around 27,000 people. The chain also operates in Germany, Slovakia, Poland, Croatia, Romania, Bulgaria and Moldova.
In recent days, the network of 16 Globus hypermarkets, which has the least market power among the seven multinational commercial networks, also published its economic results. In the fiscal year to June 30, 2023, Globus slightly increased sales from 24.42 billion crowns to 24.94 billion crowns and net profit from 581 million crowns to 594 million crowns.
While competitors’ sales grew much faster due to high inflation, often by more than 10%, Globus’ sales increased by only 2%. At the same time, the chain identified the extremely high increase in inflation as the most serious economic problem of the last business year, mainly due to the increase in energy, food and fuel prices. Consumer prices increased 15.1% year-on-year in 2022 and 9.7% in the first half of 2023.
“Customers are changing their purchasing behavior and the turnover of goods on sale is increasing. The customer often limits his purchases only to the basic assortment at lower price levels and is increasingly looking for an assortment of own brands. We have noticed a decrease in the frequency and quantity of purchases,” the company commented on the first half of 2023.
Globus has a different commercial policy than its competitors. It focuses on a wide range of food and non-food products, has its own extensive production, including its own butcher’s shop, bakery or its own restaurant within hypermarkets, and has historically also offered fewer discount events. In addition to hypermarkets, it also operates small-format Globus Fresh stores and petrol stations.
