Swarm of bees attacks learners at Middelburg school

All sports activities were suspended at a Mpumalanga high school this morning after learners were attacked by bees.

At least 12 learners were transported to hospital after being stung by a swarm of bees at Steelcrest High School in Middelburg, Mpumalanga, this morning.

According to information gathered at the school, the bees attacked the learners at the rugby, hockey and netball fields at about 09:30.

Many other learners were also stung at the school, which was playing sports against Hoërskool Hendrina.

Several ambulances were dispatched to the school to help the learners.

The Middelburg Observer spoke to the school principal, Piet Bothma, this morning. He said all sports activities were suspended, and the parents of the learners who were stung by the bees were notified.

He said only two learners were seriously injured. The others were taken to hospital as a safety precaution.
