In the not-so-far future, a part of the world has embraced slavery. Slaves are almost entirely removed from the jurisdiction of the state, as it is the duty of the master to discipline their slaves and keep them in check. However, most slaves aren’t humans. Instead, the scientists of this country have used advanced genetics to create a multitude of humanoid species, commonly referred to as demi-humans or just demis. Examples of demi species include cat-girls, dog-girls, or even fennec-girls. They all share some physical traits with their animal namesakes, such as fluffy ears and tails. Other than that, they also share less obvious characteristics, like a superhuman sense of smell, hearing, sight, or certain mental qualities.

Demis are commonly bred by professional breeders before being sold to their new masters on **** markets. They can never truly be free, as even when their master sets them “free”, the master is still legally responsible for the **** and may punish them as he sees fit. Therefore, for a master to set a **** free, not only has the master to be a very benevolent one, but he also needs to trust his **** not to cause any trouble for him, which is why there aren’t many free demis, although they do exist. The reason for this policy is that demis are viewed as inferior to humans, little more than animals, and therefore need to be controlled. To truly get rid of a demi, a master would need to sell them or have them put down.

While demis are born into slavery and may never escape it, all humans are born free. There are different ways for a human to end up as a ****: They can be forcibly sold into slavery as a severe punishment for crimes they have committed or to cover their debts if they have agreed to such a condition. Some humans may even choose to sell themselves into slavery, although this is very rare. It is not uncommon that there are conditions placed upon the enslavement of a human, such as for the master not to cause any permanent harm to the **** or a time limit for the slavery. If a master wishes to take a **** that has a criminal history, he needs to obtain a certificate from the state for his ability to control unruly slaves. Such a master can also buy a demi from the government that otherwise would be put down as a danger to the public.

Except for between breeders, neither demis nor humans may be sold into slavery before they reach maturity. For humans, that means that they can’t be enslaved before turning 18. Demis age and mature at a different rate, which is distinct for every demi species, meaning that their age of maturity varies wildly.

When in public, slaves must always wear a collar to make their status apparent. The only exception to this rule is for “free” demis, i.e. demis that have been set free by their masters., which in practice means that free demis never wear any kind of collar. Additionally, all slaves have a subcutaneous chip that can be read by everybody with a smartphone or even at a distance with special scanners. This, combined with a strong police **** and heavy border controls, makes escape for any **** nigh impossible.

Since demis are always slaves and slaves can’t form contracts or sue, any demi beyond the immediate protection of its master will often get harassed, no matter whether they are free or not. For this reason, demis tend to develop a deep need for their master, even though they aren’t always treated kindly. Human slaves on the other hand are treated with more kindness, since although they are slaves, they are still also humans.
